James Bolam and Michael French star as
father and son doctors in this family
drama series. Set in the 1950s, a
decade of great change for the National
Health Service.
It is the 1950s and times are changing
for GP Arthur Gilder (played by James
Bolam). Things are looking optimistic in
the aftermath of war while the creation
of the NHS is bringing a host of changes
to his Lancashire surgery and cottage
hospital.
Arthur has lived in the close-knit
community of Ormston all of his life and
he is hoping to hand over his village
practise to his son, Tom (played by
Michael French). This is the last thing
on Tom's mind, however.
The main filming location Downham near
Clitheroe, Lancashire is a privately
owned by Lord and Lady Clitheroe. Every
house is rented and certain modern
things are banned from being used in the
town by the tenant's contract such as
television antenna's and satellite
dishes. |
